IWD 2021: Be yourself, be strong – be a woman

4th March 2021

As we celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March, Jude Weston, Director at NG Chartered Surveyors, hosts a virtual round the table chat with team members Charlotte Steggles and Ellis Cullen about the positive impact of women in their lives.

It is safe to say that none of us would be where we are without inspirational women in our lives.

‘’I have grown up watching my Mum work and look after my brother and I,”

Says Charlotte.

“Nothing ever seemed to phase her. I will always be grateful of everything she and my Dad have done and continue to do for me.”

With the social media world now a huge part of our every day, who do we see as being influential there?

Ellis says:

‘’Jessica Ennis Hill – she is an all-round champion, and after having her child, she won her third world title! Just goes to show that having a child doesn’t hold you back from achieving your own personal goals.”

And what about the benefits of being a woman; how do you apply these to new challenges?

Both Charlotte and Ellis agree that utilising strength in approaching a challenge in a different manner – assessing a situation collectively, applying empathy, conflict management, adaptability, and teamwork, helps to efficiently resolve a problem.

So, allowing for these benefits, how important is it to have women in your workplace? Ellis says:

‘’Hugely important, particularly in an industry which is male dominated.”

Charlotte adds:

‘’For me to have women who I can look up to and see that they are paving the way is amazing, it gives me the confidence that we can do this job and have the same opportunities.”

Allowing for your experiences, what advice would you give to younger women entering the profession?

Charlotte says:

‘’Just be yourself. Be strong. If an employer does not respect you because you are a woman then they do not deserve you.”

Ellis adds:

‘’Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Making mistakes is the best way to learn!’’

Jude adds:

‘’It is a privilege to work with Charlotte and Ellis and help nurture and mentor them on their chosen career path. They are dedicated, conscientious and passionate to work hard for the NG team and do the best job for our clients.”
