Ship IT Appliances Sets Sail
22nd March 2012
SHIP IT Appliances, a Nottingham based online supplier of domestic kitchen equipment, has secured new premises on Moorgreen industrial estate, Eastwood – and is planning a big expansion overseas.
Managed by graduate recruit Henry Henson at NG Chartered Surveyors, the deal was completed in less then five days from viewing to handing over the keys.
The move into bigger premises will help Ship It directors, Raj Dhiri, and Jay Clifton expand the firm’s customer base into Europe and the USA.
Henry Henson, from NG, said: “The Sycamore Pods at Moorgreen, Eastwood are proving extremely popular because they are giving burgeoning businesses the flexibility to trade up or downsize.
“Companies with a good track record are now able to secure bank funding which is having a positive knock on effect for the economy as a whole. Small, private enterprises like Ship It Appliances are moving on to the industrial park and are providing local employment which is crucial for the local economy. Maplebeck Holdings built the speculative nursery units in order to attract firms just like this. There are nine pods in total all between 1,000 sq ft and the ninth being 1,500 sq ft.”
Raj Dhiri, of Ship It Appliances, said: “We started trading from my garage with a £600 investment. Now we are bursting at the seams and have plans to recruit an administration team as well as warehouse staff and an IT executive to manage the SEO and advertising of the firm.
“Our goal in next year is to turnover £1 million. In our first year we turned over £300,000. This year we plan to have doubled that to £700,000 so we are on target. Next year we have forecasted 25% growth.
“I started off in the kitchen business over 25 years ago after working in the industry as a sales manager for several national companies. With Jay’s managerial background and IT knowledge we decided to set up our own business and since then we have never looked back.
“Our customer base is in the domestic market. Over 80% of stock is sold online The secret of our success is passing our supplier discount on to our online customers, and in order to continue getting the very best prices from suppliers we needed to order larger quantities of stock, but needed the space to store them. That’s when we realised that the business needed to grow and that we needed more space.
“At the moment we get our stock from UK based suppliers, but we have seen an opportunity to import containers from oversea manufacturers at a much more competitive price. This means we will be able to offer a better price to our customers, not only in the UK but to new customers in the EU.
“More people than ever before are finding the products they want at DIY stores and then they are going online to find them cheaper. And because we offer free delivery we can offer a really competitive price.
“Our long term plan is to partner up with the one of the biggest kitchen appliance suppliers in the UK and then to trade in the USA.
“I needed an agent that would help us move quickly. I had a big stock order coming in and I didn’t want to move it between the old and new unit. So I picked the lease up from NG on Friday and I had the keys on Monday morning. By Monday afternoon we were moved in with all the new stock around us! If we want to do something, we do it. I didn’t want to wait weeks.
“We instantly liked the unit at Moorgreen because it is very flexible. The landlord has offered us another half unit, or full unit, as and when we need it. This sort of flexibility is ideal for a growing business.
“Not only is it brand new but it feels really secure with the gate, shutters and doors. Plus it has easy access to the motorway. Its a perfect location to be delivering products from.”
